How The Cobra Power Inverter Works

The Cobra power inverter is an electronic product that has been designed and built to take low-voltage DC (Direct Current) power from your automobile or other low-voltage power supplies and convert it to standard 115 volt AC (Alternating Current) power like the current you have in your home. Works very well except the watt read out. Will not read low wattage use example 150 watts will not show on readout. when I hook up my drill it will read but jumps all over the place. Voltage reads just fine. I have just ordered the cobra 400 watt. I would buy this inverter agean over all a very good unit

This unit works fine in a scenario where you have a constant 12v feed such as off an alternator. I was trying to use it as a backup supply off a marine battery to run the fan & ignitor in a corn burner. Although the load was low the battery only lasted about an hour. I did try multiple batteries but found that the only way it worked was to be hooked up to a running vehicle. I have a neighbor running a similar setup with a generic brand inverter and his battery lasts several days before requiring a recharge. He did bring his battery and inverter over to try with my corn burner as a known good setup and all seemed fine.

I have just installed this inverter in my RV and I can not get the fans to turn on no matter what I do. I have had it running about 1200 watts for about 15 minutes until the unit starts getting warm to the touch and still no fans. I have even put a hairdryer on it to heat it up and still no fans. Is this normal? PLEASE HELP! On my old Cobra 2575 the fans would turn on as soon as there was any load.

I bought CPI 1575 (new) and it had a very low power output. I exchanged it for another assuming I got a bad one. I decided to bench test this one before installing. The voltage on this one varied between 89 and 122 volts depending on load. Sent this back for a refund and ordered a Xantrex 1200. The Xantrex 1200 cost more but it works perfect. Luckily Amazon's return policy made the exchages very easy.

Buyers should be aware of the following problem. The recharging system has what tech support described as a "low-charge cutoff", which is designed to keep the battery from falling below a minimum level of charge. The problem occurs when the unit falls below the minimum charge which can happen if you leave it sitting around for a while. When the unit is plugged into an outlet to charge the battery, the "low power cutoff" prevents the battery from being charged, so you find yourself in a catch-22. The battery cannot be charged because the "cutoff" mechanism prevents the battery from being used OR EVEN CHARGED! (A red light accompanied by a clicking sound is heard when this occurs) Tech support's recommendation is to turn the unit upside-down for 24hrs (I kid you not) and try again. If this dosen't work, their recommendation is to throw it away and buy a new one. My recommendation is to avoid buying the charger at all until they reengineer it to not self-destruct. Caveat Emptor.

I've owned the PowerPack 200 for two years now. It's a WELL designed, versatile product. Functions are clearly marked and mutually exclusive so LOTS of built-in safety! Switches are precise. I love it.



I own a pontoon boat and have used the PP200 as a power source to inflate large water toys (with their 12V pump). Also have run a laptop computer on board. It's very handy to pump up bicylce tires or small trailer tires.



I carry it to the boat with every outing. I find the built-in molded handle ideal to grip with ROOM for your fingers.



On our last outing we returned near dark and found my daughter's car would NOT start. Parking was precarious with odd positions of the cars. I used the PP200 to start her car. It was EASY to connect and worked well. There would not have been another way to do it. The PP200 was worth EVERY penny that night.



Sooner or later I anticipate "emergency" starting my boat or ANOTHER boat in trouble.

It powered my Dell Studio Laptop with Earthmate GPS unit flawlessly on a recent 1000 mile trip. It didn't get overly warm and it is quiet.

I bought this unit because it has a cord on the 12 volt end so that it can be plugged into our tightly quartered cigarette lighter outlet. It also meets my power needs. Be aware, this is really only an 80 watt unit that handles 100 watts for no more than a couple of minutes. At 80 watts it will draw about 6 to 7 amps from the lighter, or accessory outlet so be sure the outlet can handle it. Our new car has three such outlets but only the lighter outlet is really up to the task (15 amps or about 15A * 14V = 210 watts). The others are fine for devices that draw only a little power like a GPS, cell phone, MP3 player, etc.



The unit has a small fan inside that comes on when the electronics inside get too warm. Be sure not to block the vent slots in the case, especially the circular ones on the bottom since this is the only intake for the fan. I don't find the fan too loud, being just barely perceptible when it comes on while I'm driving. Mine feels solid, well made, is simple to use and does what it's suppose to.

Haven't gotten the opportunity to use any of the power pack features other than the flashligh. Very bright. One caveat is that I ordered the Xpower POWERPACK, but the Amazon's affliated parter sent the DURACEL brand which got low marks from users, but has the same features as the Xpower. I questioned the retailer, and their response was that DURACEL manufactures the powerpack for Xpower. My response - "Hmmmmm..... why not just advertise and sell the Duracel?"



Update: I used this unit on 7/29/09 after a bad tstorm in the DC area, and the extra power outlets came in handy when using my laptop, and charging the cell phone. Used it again on 9/7/09 to assist my elderly neighbor with her Mitusbishi Galant that would not start (Car is less than 1yr. old so I was wondering why it wouldn't start). Connected the DURACEL power pack to the battery terminals and the car started right up. Excellent.

We purchased this unit specifically because we own a Lexus RX 400h, which we love, and the battery in the car goes dead if we go away for 3 or 4 weeks, which we do twice a year at the least. We haven't had to use it yet, but we are confident it will do the job. We inspected it when it arrived, reviewed all the additional features it has for other situations, charged it up, and liked it a lot. We don't need it if the car is left at home, but we would need it if we left the car in an airport parking lot. We actually don't know exactly how many days the car's battery is good for, but this unit will be kept in the car. Lexus has a PLUG IN unit they can install for long idle situations, but that would not have resolved the airport parking lot problem. We are very comfortable now knowing that we would not have to call roadside assistance. We would never have imagined this problem prior to owning a hybrid and of course, the fact is that we must be unusual hybrid owners, as the dealership had not encountered this problem.

Quick review: Functions as advertised as a jumper, do not use as a power device for extended periods of time.



Extended review:

This product came to me functioning properly except for the work light (which was a loose wire and I fixed it easily). I followed the instructions for charging and then used its power inverter to charge a few small electronics I have. Everything worked great. I then used it to power a laptop pc and it lasted about 45 minutes. I re-charged it again and left it sit for about 2 months. My car battery died because I hadn't driven it in 3 weeks so I brought the power wagon out, and it functioned exactly as advertised. Of course it advertises that you can let it sit for 6 months, but it still has a great charge level after jumping the car so that is a good sign. I wouldn't recommend this product to anyone looking for something to run larger appliances (even if they are within the advertised range of wattage) off of for more than a minute or two. If you're looking for a portable battery jumper/light/pump/radio or a little extra power to charge mp3 players or phones (the usb power function is great) while away from civilization (and weight isn't an issue) than this is a great product for you.
