   "Excellent Inverter, True surge capacity" 2009-12-14

  I bought this inverter after researching several different models. My house is fairly rural, and I lose power a half-dozen times a year. About 2 of these outages last more than a day, so clearly this won't help with that, as I don't have a dozen deep cycle batteries lying around.
  
  
  
  This model has incredible starting capacity, and I purchased this model because I wanted one that could start and run my fridge from a battery so I don't lose a few hundred dollars in food every time the power goes out. The manual states that this model can provide 2x rated power (1600 w in this case) for a FULL 10 SECONDS. That is incredible and unheard of in an inverter this price. If you download the manuals for most, they state they can provide 2x rated power, but for only 0.1 second. 0.1 second? That's hardly helpful, and won't start any motor. I can confirm that this unit will easily start and run both of my refrigerators without any difficulty. Obviously the surge capacity is reduced with the batteries reduced power capacity, and it won't surge 2x when the battery is low. Additionally, I was impressed with the manual recommending "just try it", if you didn't know if the inverter could handle your load. That indicates they trust their design, and gives me confidence as well.
  
  
  
  Just today I used this inverter with a trolling motor battery from my boat. I was able to watch TV and operate a lamp with a CFL bulb for about 5 hours until power came back on. This includes my 57" CRT projection TV, 700w amp and DirecTiVo. My Kill-A-Watt EZ indicates that it pulls about 350w idle. It ran from this inverter for 5 hours without any difficulty, and only became warm to the touch. The power output is cleaner than my borrowed generator; the TV picture was rock solid, no audio artifacts through the amp.
  
  
  
  Caveats:
  
  1) When the battery runs down, the surge capacity is reduced. It still had an hour of TV left, but it would no longer start the fridge.
  
  2) The power is not clean enough to satisfy the APC UPS on my TiVo. It ran the battery down on the UPS since it was convinced my power was dirty. Moving the power to the inverter directly solved this problem.
  
  3) This unit pulls a LOT of current when running. Tonight one of the nuts on the battery post was loose, and the inverter kept shutting down. Once I realized the problem, I tightened the nut and all was well. The loose nut could not provide the current needed to run the Inverter. This is a good buy for the money: it is small, portable, versatile, and provides regulated, surge protected AND fuse protected power to electronic devices. The passthrough cigarette lighter port is convenient, and the usb charger port is even moreso - it comes with a little extension adapter which is great for electronics that charge via usb. The twin 110 volt outlets provide ample power for up to 200w/350w peak devices, making it ideal for laptops, lcd televisions, or other small devices.

It feels solid, and best of all, you do not have to unplug the device to turn it off. There is a switch on the bezel. The only minor fault I can find with it is that it doesn't quite fit a standard cupholder, but that is easily remedied with the use of a wedge or a cheap 3rd party cupholder from your local auto parts store. I liked it so much, I bought 2 of them. :)

Hi, I ran this in my car for a while, works as promised, one thing to be aware of is that the fan noise is audible although by no means annoying. The road noise takes care of that when driving, more pronounced if you're resting somewhere and the engine's off. I had regular fanless inverter before this one and it used to run warm/hot depending on the temperature inside the car. This one runs cool, so the trade-off is heat versus noise. Those of you more involved with computers know this little conundrum anyway. It's a good deal overall.

I bought this inverter so that I could use my laptop in my car without running out of battery (as a passenger of course). It works fantastic. It's a good size, and I've used it on two different laptops, my iPod with the USB connector, my GPS with the car adapter, and my phone charger with the car adapter. I think the best part about it is that it has the car adapter on it, so when you're using up the cigarette lighter in the car, it's not impossible to plug something else in, like my GPS. I've never had a problem with it, it works perfectly and I've owned it for a while now, almost a year. I highly recommend it, it's a great value!

 "Low voltage alarm ruins this product (updated)" 2010-02-07

This is my second try with this inverter and the second one I am returning to Amazon. Regardless of your battery bank and regardless of the cables used, this product is pretty much worthless for one reason. That reason being the Low voltage alarm. On this product it comes on as early as 11.7 volts which is totally unacceptable. 11.7 volts is way to early to be setting off alarms. At that voltage you still have A TON of battery life left before you should even be concerned. The threshold for the alarm is 11.3 +/- 3% which max is 11.669 volts. Both of the inverters I had were on the high end of that scale. The first setup was connected to 3 brand new deep cycle Interstate batteries with 4, 18" long 4 gauge cables running to the inverter (Overkill if anything). The second try was 2 brand new deep cycle 6 volt golf cart batteries with 4, 30" long cables running to the inverter. After the first day of camping the batteries have already drained off into the mid 11 volts and these inverters start sounding alarms and don't stop beeping until you turn them off. The industry standard for low voltage alarms on inverters seems to be 10.5 +/- .5 volts which max would be 11 volts and that is a lot better then 11.7. I returned this inverter and I am purchasing a Vector brand inverter with the best alarm threshold with a max of 10.6 volts before the alarm sounds. However, when these inverters are getting the volts they need with the heavy cables they need they do put out the advertised 2500 watts no problem. Amazon's return policy is amazing by the way.



Update 2/17/10....The Vector inverter even though advertised as 10.6 max for the alarm started sounding it's alarm at 10.97 volts. That inverter was not much better then the Cobra in any aspect but it was a lot more money. So my final verdict is that these are good inverters for a great price with the only downfall being the low voltage alarm coming on way too early.

I purchased this for my semi-truck. The inverter requires 2 sets of 4 awg wire. I soldered my ends first and used heavy duty ends for the battery contacts. The cables are 3'9" long.(Cobra said no more than 4') I tried to overload this inverter with a 6hp shop-vac and could not. The remote for me is a must but the remote is another story. If you are looking for an inverter that will power just about anything, I highly recommend this one. The only reason I did not give it five stars is that the length of the power cables limits where the inverter can be placed. All other aspects of this inverter are very impressive. As a side note, I use this inverter for a microwave in my truck,(among other things)and the modified sine wave is no problem at all.

At first i conected a number 4 cable with large battery clamps to

one end of my bank of eight batterys was not happy at all

wasn't even half that my old 3000 watt was. Wouldnt run,

small air compresser, toster oven, it would run small fridg

and dehumidapher if only pluging one at time.

So after a time i disided to connect it anyway

I made two sets of cables about 3 feet each solderd

some homemade copper ends with a hole to screw one end of

my batterys. then dipping the other end of cable in hot solder

for the inverter side. connected to both ends of my battery bank

To my surprise now it was running all that

my old high end 3000 watt inverter would run. very happy. just hope it will

last for a few years



just wanted to let some of you all know that the inverter needs alot of battery

and both sets of cables to get the best from it



Only a expert that knows what they are doing should connect this inverter!!!

To all the people who have issues in getting full or high wattage out of this or any other unit: you MUST have thick (#4) and short (3-4ft) 12v cables to your battery bank. Otherwise the inverter will be starved for current and cause the "low voltage protection" to kick in. Make sure your battery/ bank are up to the task as well.



This unit works great for me. I tested it with combination's of differing equipment (electric chainsaw, power saw, A/C unit, refrigerator, electric heating unit). No problems for me. Do your homework before giving out 1 star reviews people...

This is a great looking unit and seems to be built very well. I have installed it in my Motorhome and have not put it to the test yet of running my tv and X box. Mounting it was alot harder than I thought it was going to be. The bracket that they have on it is not as wide as the unit it self. So when you try and put bolts/screws into the bracket slots it is almost impossible. I was able to fit some round head 10-32 machine screws into the slot openings in the bracket. The problem is that when you try and put a screw driver to the screw head the body of the unit gets in the way. And I was mounting this on the underside of a shelf with little room beside the unit. I have it mounted and will never want to R&R it. Other wise a great price and really small for it,s wattage.

How The Cobra Power Inverter Works

This unit works fine in a scenario where you have a constant 12v feed such as off an alternator. I was trying to use it as a backup supply off a marine battery to run the fan & ignitor in a corn burner. Although the load was low the battery only lasted about an hour. I did try multiple batteries but found that the only way it worked was to be hooked up to a running vehicle. I have a neighbor running a similar setup with a generic brand inverter and his battery lasts several days before requiring a recharge. He did bring his battery and inverter over to try with my corn burner as a known good setup and all seemed fine.

I have just installed this inverter in my RV and I can not get the fans to turn on no matter what I do. I have had it running about 1200 watts for about 15 minutes until the unit starts getting warm to the touch and still no fans. I have even put a hairdryer on it to heat it up and still no fans. Is this normal? PLEASE HELP! On my old Cobra 2575 the fans would turn on as soon as there was any load.

I bought CPI 1575 (new) and it had a very low power output. I exchanged it for another assuming I got a bad one. I decided to bench test this one before installing. The voltage on this one varied between 89 and 122 volts depending on load. Sent this back for a refund and ordered a Xantrex 1200. The Xantrex 1200 cost more but it works perfect. Luckily Amazon's return policy made the exchages very easy.

I bought this unit because it has a cord on the 12 volt end so that it can be plugged into our tightly quartered cigarette lighter outlet. It also meets my power needs. Be aware, this is really only an 80 watt unit that handles 100 watts for no more than a couple of minutes. At 80 watts it will draw about 6 to 7 amps from the lighter, or accessory outlet so be sure the outlet can handle it. Our new car has three such outlets but only the lighter outlet is really up to the task (15 amps or about 15A * 14V = 210 watts). The others are fine for devices that draw only a little power like a GPS, cell phone, MP3 player, etc.



The unit has a small fan inside that comes on when the electronics inside get too warm. Be sure not to block the vent slots in the case, especially the circular ones on the bottom since this is the only intake for the fan. I don't find the fan too loud, being just barely perceptible when it comes on while I'm driving. Mine feels solid, well made, is simple to use and does what it's suppose to.

It's compact and I like the multiple functions. I used it on sailing trip to keep my phone, laptop, GPS and camera batteries charged while off shore. It did the job I bought it for and it didn't take up much room in the luggage and didn't add any weight. Don't try to run a microwave or hairdryer with it though.

  I bought this so I could plug my laptops, phone chargers, portable shaver, etc. into a 3-prong receptacle in my 2010 Camry. The unit makes a little noise, but you can barely hear it if the heat/AC fan is on low or the radio is on. I've been using this on an as-needed basis for months now and have never had any issues.   My only issue with this unit is that it's fans are always on. I was working in my truck and there's no where to hide this thing where I'm not worried about it overheating.   I must say I really liked this inverter from Whistler. It performed very well in daily use. I used in My street sweeper that I drive in NYC for 8 hour work days. It worked awesomely to power my desk radio and Hamilton Beach air purifier. I started using June 1st 2009 and it lasted until just after Christmas. I loved the whistle it gave if my battery was low however it was the same whistle that would announce its death followed by horrible electrical smoke and smell. I was going to attempt to submit a warranty request but I have since lost the inverter altogether.   I bought this device after years of having a much lower power model work great and this one had good reviews.
  
  
  
  For lower power applications it has worked weeks flawlessly. Today I finally needed to use it for what I purchased it for. Startup watts on my device is 380 watts and continuous power is around 200. Well under the 800 watt peak of this unit. It died on within a second. Thinking the fuse had blown, I popped it out and it isn't. The unit itself is blown.
