I do a lot of car stuff and am addicted to Porsches, BMWs and Ferraris. A few years back, when all Porsches started coming "factory fill" with Mobil 1 in the crank case, I knew that this was a great product. I have used it for nearly 20 years and it has paid for itself many times over. I owned my 914 for nearly 18 years, running it on the track several times a year - with only Mobil 1 15/50 as my oil. After 15 years of abuse, we tore the motor down and found it was clean, varnsh-free and the rod bearings were nearly perfect. That says a lot about the product - racing being the ultimate test for a car.
Synthetic oils are the way to go for any motor you care about - the protection is worth the extra money. And, if you change your own oil (and you should), it's only a little more expensive than paying someone else to do it with conventional oil.
If you have an older car, you may find that it may develop leaks because the oil is very slippery and can sneak past the seals (it did on my wife's older Saturn and I had to stop using it). However, she bought a new Saturn (don't ask me why, as a car guy, it's too embarassing) and the 5W-30 stuff works great and doesn't leak.
Buy a good quality filter and install it properly - you will be good to go. In this era of $3.00 / gallon gas, the benefits of a very slippery oil will pay dividends at the pump.
